Gone Girl – Gillian Flynn

Gone GirlGone Girl by Gillian Flynn

My rating: 1 of 5 stars

“A lot of people lacked that gift: knowing when to fuck off.”

I thought i would have enjoyed this waaaay more than i did, the main plot is interesting enough but it just felt really slow paced and at times boring as hell. This is my first Gillian Flynn novel and based on others reviews about how thrilling and breathtaking this novel is as well as others i felt kinda let down. The twist was good, just felt like it took forever to get there and i didn’t really like any of the characters so that was also an issue for me because i didn’t really care about them or what was happening. Being a lover of thrillers, im still surprised i didn’t enjoy this considering it was raved about and spoken so highly of.

Amy has gone missing on her fifth wedding anniversary , signs of a struggle are evident in the house as well as a poorly cleaned pool of blood found in the kitchen. When the evidence starts coming together, her husband Nick is the prime suspect as his behaviour isn’t that of a man who is missing his wife, often seen smiling or lying about important details to the cops, acting completely odd, sneaky and with something major to hide- And he does, Nick is hiding alot.
What seemed like a perfect marriage to those around, soon is shed in a different light when there could be possible abuse amongst the couple and amy fearing for her life so much she felt the need to arm herself, all this being leaked via diary entries.
When the media get a hold of the story, things turn ugly for Nick very quickly, being labelled as a killer and people demanding the truth about what happened to his wife, this is before Nicks big secret comes out, a secret that not only ruins him, but almost proves his guilt.

Now this is one fucked up couple, why anyone would want a relationship like this is beyond me. They are not only dysfunctional, out of love and miserable with one another, its a ridiculous why they are even together or fell in love to begin with. Nick on one hand has his head so far up his own ass that you literally dont know where to start with him; he is a liar, a fake, obsessed with image and being the ‘good guy’ even though he really isn’t, not to mention a complete idiot.
Amy is psychotic, crazy and downright bizarre. It almost feels like because she is attractive, people instantly like her and fall for her shit although she is totally 100% batshit crazy.
I didn’t like either of Nick or Amy, i didn’t like the cops, Amy’s parents or Nick sister. I literally didn’t like a single character in this novel, which is completely out of character for me as there is always at least one that i do, even if the rest are shit.

The main plot was interesting enough that i kept reading, but seriously half way through i was going to DNF it for being irritably slow paced and lacking something… or maybe it was just too many itty bitty details that did my head in. Being a lover of thrillers i expected so much more from this, so many people have spoken to highly of it, of Gillian Flynn.. maybe i need to try another book because this just didn’t do it for me.
How i feel after reading this:
