Blood is money.
Time is Power.
Desire is Treachery.
Seeing so many mixed on this book, I knew I had to pick it up and judged it for myself and I have to say I was not disappointed one bit! I went in pretty blind because I knew I wanted to read it for myself, but I did know that time was currency in this world, blood turned into iron coins would either give you more years or take them away. In a sense its very much like ‘In Time’, you know, that Justin Timberlake movie from a couple of years ago, but it was still original and captivating. I will definitely be reading more from Sara Holland in the future!
Jules and her father are struggling for money. With her father bleeding his years away, and the signs of madness slowly showing, which often does when one is almost out of time, Jules decides to travel back to the Gerling Estate, where one of the most powerful families lives and Jules spent her childhood. Going back will be dangerous, having fled when she was young with her father, always looking over their shoulders even now – Jules is running out of options.
Jules is about to discover a lot more than she ever expected, things that lead all the way back to when time was originally bound to blood, why she and her father fled their home, and why her father is urging her to stay away from the Queen. What will she uncover that could change time itself?
The world building! I honestly loved it! It wasn’t overly detailed but it was a world that drew me in right from the start with its unique yet at times complex magic system. I smashed through this book in only a day, but it’s definitely something I would read again and enjoy as much as the first time I read it. I’ve said this before but im really digging this whole Kings, Queens and Kingdom theme I have going on at the moment.
I liked the characters, literally all of them. They felt real, and well thought out. I like when characters are looked in one way, especially by our MC and then things change, and you’re like so am i meant to like this guy/girl now? Are we sure we dont want to kill him/her just to make sure they aren’t pulling a fast one on us? Okay cool, im on board, this guy/girl ain’t so bad, he’s just misunderstood. I feel that on a deep level.
The writing was very fast paced, besides the beginning which was a little slow, but hey thats okay, the story is just beginning! Besides the start, it kept quite a good pace throughout and held my interest. The twists and turns along the way?! Holy shit, some of them I did not see coming, especially the one at the end. But guess you’ll have to read it to know what im talking about!
Overall I dont have any complaints! I loved the plot and the characters, the writing was fast-paced and intriguing, the world building was well done and the magic system was unique yet complex.
Besides the start not being the strongest, I loved this book inside and out. I mean come on? Have you seen that cover? and the book itself *sighs* I loved it.
What if the person to be feared is me?
