“How easily the hunter can become the prey. All it takes is a new perspective.”
I’ll be completely honest, I picked up this book simply because the cover intrigued me. Then I realized it was the author of Skulduggery Pleasant, a book I picked up in high school; I never finished the series, because I didn’t realize it was a series at the time and picked up the third book not knowing what the hell was going on. In saying that, I’ve known many people who read and liked the series, so I couldn’t wait to see what else Derek Landy had come up with.
“When you’re on the Demon Road, you dont really talk about the Demon Road. Its considered…crass. You can mention it, explain it, all that’s fine.. but just talk about it. And don’t call it that, either.”
16 year old, Amber Lamont has always thought her parents were weird, cold and unloving, nothing like the parents of her peers- she didn’t know how right she was. As things start to unravel, Amber must go on the run, she will no longer know who to trust, the things she uncovers and sees will change her life, her world forever. Vampires, serial killers, killer cars and red skinned demons will open her world up to all that once seemed like a fantasy. Jumping from one threat to the next, Amber will need to be one step ahead, if she wants to stay alive.
“Fine,” she said. “What would you call it when I change?”
Glen’s grin was immense ” Getting horny.”
“Oh, I hate you so much”
The plot of this book was like WOW! I loved every single minute of it. Derek Landy put a lot of thought into keeping this book fast-paced, exciting and keeping the reader on the edge of their seat. As soon as you think things are quietening down, the roller coaster begins again, with even more at stake. So much was added to this book, and yet I still wanted more. Thankfully I already have the next book and have started reading it, because it would be so painful not knowing what was going to happen next and having to wait.
“It’s the principle of the thing. Wherever possible, you do not antagonize serial killers. That’s just a general rule of life.”
I liked all the characters. Amber Lamont is your typical teen, well, kind of. The secrets with her keep coming and coming. She is ballsy, determined, smart and witty. Milo has a few secrets of his own, but a real asset to the team and in Ambers survival. He is resourceful, a bit moody, a quiet kind of guy who is always one step ahead. Glen is a bit of an idiot, with the Death Mark imprinted on his skin, he doesn’t have long to live unless he can track down the intended person of the Mark and be saved. He is a sensitive, naive, foot in mouth kind of guy.
The banter between the gang is hilarious, and one of the way Derek Landy adds a little brightness to such a dark, gloomy book.
In all, I loved it, I recommend it, and I cannot wait to finish this series. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more from Derek Landy, and I might even go back and read the Skulduggery Pleasant series. If you haven’t read this book, pick it up! Its an adrenaline-filled ride coated in darkness and filled with all sorts of creatures.
